For Pennsic 50, I was asked to make a scroll for Iron Bog Court. The recipient was Padraig and the award was a Sable Gauntlet - the Barony's first level aware for martial prowess.
Shortly before I received this assignment, I had been doing research for scribal sources and came across the below exemplar, Français 844 | Gallica (bnf.fr) 13th Century, French.
I figured that with the knight, this would work well as a scroll for a martial prowess award.
As this was going to be a smaller scroll, I decided to use the image as the initial letter "T" of the scroll. Iron Bog's device is three cattails (punks), so I put those on the horse's barding. Although the original manuscript is in what appears to be excellent condition for its age, I chose to use brighter colors in my paints.
The words were composed by Aislinn Chiabach:,
Words:
Those that display martial success
So soon after starting no less
Became of note in Iron Bog
Now without further aplomb
Great Andre and Genevra
Our Baron and Baroness empower
Our Padraig Cham of thrown weapons
Well fitted by our perceptions
The Sable Gauntless he has earned
As We both now have affirmed
Done at Pennsic L, Anno Societatis LVII.
The paper is Bristol and I use Calli calligraphy ink. Paint is Windsor & Newton and Holbein gouache.
